Step 1 Cleanup

So the miniature was ordered through Heroforge in their premium plastic material for the best quality printing. The layer lines on it are virtually unnoticeable but there was an error where part of the hair of the model was clipping through the shield. It was super easy to clean up with a hobby knife and a small file.

Step 2 Priming

I primed the entire miniature in Krylon Camouflage Black spray paint. I really like this for priming miniatures it is a super flat black and the fusion tech from Krylon really makes it stick on plastics of all types. Apply it in thin coats until you get good coverage over the whole model. After this is done the layer lines from the 3d printing process completely disappear and we have a great base for our paint and the dark color will hide some of our mistakes as we go along.

Step 3 Base Coat Skin

Next we base coat the face and ears in Vallejo Game Color Dwarf Skin with a size 2 brush, it may take a few coats to get a nice even coverage and do not worry if the color gets on any of the hair as we will be painting that over later.

Step 3 Shade Skin

Apply some Reikland Fleshshade to everything we painted in the skin tone, I recommend a nice soft brush that holds allot of liquid for this but any reasonably sized brush will do. This wash will pool in the recesses of the model shading it in the process and really add a nice tone to the skin. Be careful though of applying too much especially to the eye sockets or if it starts to pool on the raised sections of the skin. If this happens wash the brush and dry it on some paper towel and you can use the brush to wick some of shade off of the model.

Step 4 Apply Skin Mid tone

Next we apply some Vallejo Game Color Elf Skintone to the skin avoiding the recesses you can use where the wash pooled as a great guide for where not to paint. We are just looking to paint the more raised areas of the face and ears.

Step 5 Shade Again and Highlight

Lightly apply the Reikland Fleshshade to all the areas of skin once again. This darkens the recesses even further providing contrast and helps blend the edges of your mid tone color into the base color. After the wash dries apply Vallejo Game Color Pale Flesh to the most raised areas of the skin with a smaller brush. Things like the bridge of the nose, brow ridge, cheeks and the tips of the ears should be highlighted. The provided picture will give you a great outline of what you should highlight.

Step 6 Base Coat Eyes

With a very small brush apply Vallejo Game Color Off White to the eyes. This step can be rather tricky for inexperienced painters if it goes outside of the area you wanted do not worry too much as we can clean that up later.

Step 7 Pupil

Next with a very small brush and Vallejo Game Color Jade Green apply the pupil to the center of the eye. Your initial instinct may be to apply a dot of color to the center but this proves to be very difficult in practice. The best way is to apply a small vertical line to the center of the eye with the color not worrying about over shooting the area too much and then cleaning the whole outline of the eye up with the Dwarf Skin Tone we use earlier.
